Two Oceans Aquarium, Cape Town

Yesterday’s brilliant weather has changed to cooler and overcast. It seems like a good day just to wander around the waterfront without any plans. In the afternoon, I end up at the Two Oceans Aquarium. It is pretty much the same layout and design as Sydney’s SeaLife Aquarium at Darling Harbour. It has a posse of sad-looking African Penguins trying to find the inspiration to start nesting in front of a constant stream of visitors. I think they have access to get out and swim in the main tank – if not there is no where near enough water for these explosive swimmers to exercise in.

At 3pm, the predators are fed – today it’s the rays and turtles turn. Yoshi the loggerhead turtle is the star of the show – even the ragged tooth (grey nurse) sharks give way to her when it’s feeding time.

Tomorrow I’m booked to go shark diving with Apex Predators at Simon’s Town. The trip goes to Seal Island, which is the only place to see great white sharks breaching like whales in pursuit of tasty Cape Fur Seals. The trip however is cancelled this afternoon, due to bad weather and lack of sharks, which is a shame.  Apex have however re-booked me to dive with Marine Dynamics, about 45mins from Hermanus on Thursday. Weather and sharks permitting of course. Even though I haven’t gone out with Apex for the dive, they seem to be a very professionally run organisation, based on my experience with them.
