Fohnfjord, Greenland

Today’s itinerary is Danmark Island & Fohnfjord. We are landing this morning at Danmark Island in Scoresby Sound. Some interesting wildflowers, a pair of snow buntings that I couldn’t get close enough too and squadrons of mosquitos that followed me everywhere.  Otherwise Danmark Island doesn’t have a lot going for it.

In the fjord, there are some spectacular icebergs, many times larger than the ship. Fohnfjord is 700 metres deep, and the icebergs have broken off glaciers closer to the Greenland icecap, and floated down the fjord. But again, these fjords do not seem to support wildlife easily – not a seal has been sighted in the water, and the birds are few and far between. It’s all about the geology of the landscape here.  Oh, and a cracking moon over the fjord!
