Stanley, East Falkland Islands

We have been fortunate in the last couple of days with the weather, which has provided smooth sailing conditions in the South Atlantic, and for visiting Steeple Jason and Carcass Islands. We are visiting Stanley in the East Falklands today (also known as Port Stanley), and our luck with the weather is rapidly running out, starting with a Force 8 gale forecast for Stanley.

This is my second trip to Stanley in adverse conditions and rather than take the comfortable option of a bus tour around Stanley, I decide to hike in the opposite direction to photograph the wreck of the Lady Elizabeth in Whalebone Cove. The Lady Liz is a rapidly deteriorating wreck, built in 1879, damaged in 1913 and used as a floating warehouse until 1936, when she drifted aground in a violent gale in her current location. She is a very photogenic old lady, and well worth the hike around the cove in the gale. The remaining copper tones in her hull are nicely offset by the green tones of the water. It’s a shame it’s such a blustery, overcast day.

Late this afternoon we set sail for South Georgia, heading into the strong northerly, and it promises to be a rolling couple of nights at sea if the current weather holds.
