Robberg Nature Reserve, Plett Bay

Plettenberg Bay has a number of easy day trips for hikers and wildlife enthusiasts. Robberg Nature Reserve is visible in the distance from The Plettenberg Hotel, and is an easy 8km drive away.

There is a small entry charge and the opening and closing times are clearly laid out on signage at the entrance to Robberg Nature Reserve. The reserve has a series of hikes of different lengths and durations ranging from 1 hour to 4 hours. There are great views back along Plettenberg Bay, which must be spectacular on a nice day with a picnic lunch. The four hour hike would be a great one to do on a bright, sunny day, but make sure you arrive before 2pm in order to complete the hike before the reserve closes.

Today however it’s quite overcast and raining on and off, so even the short 1 hour hike is getting a little slippery. There is little wildlife to be seen today other than some dassies (rock hyraxs) and a mongoose. Note that there is a bit of clambering over rocks even on the short trail, so be prepared with decent rubber-soled shoes. On an overcast wet day, there are only 6 other hikers.
