Arctic 2013

Here we go… the start of Arctic 2013 – a series of blog entries documenting my travels from Melbourne to Sydney, Sydney to Paris, Paris to Oslo,  an expedition to the Arctic lands of Norway, Greenland and Iceland, and back again!

QANTAS domestic airport in Melbourne is a madhouse. It seems like all 53,000 people who went to the Wallabies versus British & Irish Lions match last night are all trying to get out of Melbourne. Worse than that, they are all trying to fly to Sydney. With me. On a 737.

Rugby Union is a middle-aged men’s game. 99% of the passengers on the flight are middle-aged men with British or Irish accents. One fatherly soul decides I need help getting my coat on and risks a sharp elbow to the ribs by fiddling with my collar not once, but twice. I decide he’s trying to acquire some Wallabies winning magic before the next and decisive test match in Sydney on Saturday.

Welcome to Sydney. It’s raining. Again. As usual.
