Egilsstaðir to Höfn, Iceland

It has rained heavily overnight, and is still drizzling in the morning. Low lying mist is still hanging over the fjord, so it puts paid to plans to head further east in search of puffins.

It is 250km from Egilsstaðir to Höfn, which should take less than 3 hours. However the road to Djúpivogur via Oxi is unpaved over a small ridge, and works at 40km or slower, so the real travel time to Djúpivogur is a couple of hours and that is only about halfway to Höfn.  Did I mention the unpaved road also has it’s own suicidal sheep?

I stop along the unpaved road to take this photo – it is a balmy 3 degrees Celsius, and the howling wind hasn’t let up yet.

A short distance later, the temperature has risen by 8 degrees. Djúpivogur is a small fishing port, noted for its bird watching. It’s also a good lunch stop after a couple of hours traipsing around the wetlands chasing birds.

Along the way, I spot this seal struggling with the catch of the day…

Höfn is a larger fishing port on the south-east coast, and also has bird-watching wetlands – the difference between the two sites seems to be the midges live in Höfn.

Höfn Hotel is the accommodation for tonight – built in 1996, it is a modern hotel, apparently popular with the two busloads of tourists who also check-in :-).
